December 6 News from Orly
Last week, the third graders got mixed up for skill groups. Each third grader was assigned to work in a small group with an adult, focusing on a very specific reading and spelling skill. The groups are meeting three times per week for 30 minutes. Your child might be working with me, another third grade teacher, or even the art or technology teacher but they are all working on literacy. The feedback I got from my students was that they have loved skills groups this first week. Our goal as teachers is to target our instruction to the needs of each student.
During literacy time and writing time, we are very focused on narratives. We've been reading and writing stories and using a story map to retell our stories. Eventually we'll be publishing some books, but that will happen some time in the future. Before then, we will spend time learning about how to start and end stories, and how to add details.
Our unit on the respiratory and circulatory systems is off to a slow start. We've spent some time learning about our heart rate. Next week, we'll learn more about the role of the heart in our bodies.
In Math, we are working on subtraction stories and subtraction facts. You can use a regular deck of cards to practice facts at home with your child. Ask them how to play Subtraction Top-It.
