This week we have been working in reading to think about what we know about a topic before we start reading. We have also been continuing with our book groups.
Our biggest change this week has been starting a new spelling program, Spelling through Morphographs. This is a direct instruction program. I do a lot of speaking and having the class respond at the same time to a signal. This first week has had us all getting familiar with the different parts of the program. So far the results have been encouraging. Please ask your child to define a morphograph for you.
In math we had an assessment on division. About half the class is comfortable with division and the other half hasn’t quite been able to apply all their great knowledge of multiplication to help them solve division. We will continue to work on that.
In writing we have reviewed some parts of speech and started adding details to our personal narratives (memoirs). Today we had a nice session on sensory words and similes and metaphors. We took a hike in the woods to write poetry about what we saw. In January we will start working on fiction.
As a reminder I have only had two parents return their driver forms. In January I would like to be able to schedule a trip to the recycling center or the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum.
If you didn’t see it, I posted our hike with our buddies on the school’s web page.
Have a great weekend!
