The Tudors

Those tricky, terrible and oh so terrific Tudors have been a fascination of sorts for my lively 3rd graders this winter season. For 3 weeks we have been studying the Tudors and working diligently on creating their celebrated portraits. The lesson is quite an undertaking and requires many steps to complete. We first started out by examining our portrait and breaking down the image in large recognizable geometrical shapes.

Winter Spirits

Coming back from a fantastic holiday break. It is always so good to have that time off and prepare for the New Year and Wow, I have lots of good ideas to get started with.

6th Grade students will be starting on their spirit dolls. This lesson will focus on Celtic folktales and will tie in nicely with our future Native American unit coming up in February. They will create a spirit doll that embodies an idea about nature: earth, wind, water...etc. and will do a little descriptive writing that tells their story. I decided to do this lesson after visiting some kooky gift shops in Salem, MA over the break and got inspired by some of the crafty things I saw. Here is a mock up of what my students will be doing this week.

The Spirit within the Trees

As any art teacher will testify, trees are glorious things to admire and to recreate. As winter arrives, we are drawn to the stark ladders of the sky. Their mystical branches extending towards the mauve and purple sunsets. I have done several art lessons around trees and this year I was inspired do something a little bit different.

The Night of of Trees is a fabulous book that features the art work of India's Gond Tribe . The illustrations are magnificent and stunningly beautiful. I purchased the fantastic art book and decided to create a 6th grade lesson around the idea of spirit trees and the numerous ways they inspire us and sustain us as well.

Yoshimi and Robots

Amazing 2nd graders are designing and creating rocking robots. Using found objects in the art room, students were able to assemble and create some very formidable and interesting robots. After we finish these 2D artworks, we will start on our 3D recycled robots. So start saving some of your more intriguing recycled goods and get ready for the invasion!
